Retrogressing Terrastock
July 12 - September 28, 1998
Aquarius Records is pleased to show the photographs of Dianne
Jones, Erik Auerbach and Maya Hayuk who documented Terrastock II in San
Francisco, April 1998. Unlike music festivals like SXSW, CMJ or the New
Music Seminar, Terrastock is not about bands being discovered by record
labels, but instead a celebration of independent, psychedelic, folk, drone,
and rock & roll. This festival was sponsored and produced by the fiercely
independent English music magazine Ptolemaic Terrascope, Aquarius Records
and Danno Booking, who brought together nearly forty bands and
approximately 700 fans from around the world.
Dianne Jones switched between two different visually stimulating
contributions during Terrastock; her first as filmmaker/projectionist
screening over 12 Bay Area artists' experimental films while incredible
musicians played transcending sounds to muse the audience members into
another space and time, and her other role as a photographer creating
images that convey the intimacy of the event. Her work can also be seen in
the most recent issue of SPIN magazine.
Erik Auerbach was initially invited by Terrastock to curate
Terrafoto, a photo exhibit at the festival based on his curatorial efforts
at Aquarius. After compiling the work of a dozen photographers for the
show, the next natural step was to document Terrastock itself. The work
created that weekend was published in the New York Times and the San
Francisco Chronicle. His photos being shown at Aquarius are just a glimpse
of his state of mind that weekend- sometimes a bit blurry and chaotic.
Maya Hayuk volunteered working the front entrance, as well as being
a part of the Terrafoto exhibition. Her work continues to explore the use of
multiple exposures and out-of-focus photography as a means of capturing
her perception of the music. Maya previously had a solo show at Aquarius
in early 1997 and has been regularly published in Snackcake, Magnet, and Bunnyhop.
All three of these photographers became caught up in something much
more than was anticipated. Terrastock became a whirlwind, blur of a
weekend, filled with amazing moments. These photos act as a scrapbook
reflecting what each of these three went through in that long weekend a
couple of months ago.
There will be an opening reception for the artists at Aquarius
Records on Wednesday, July 15th from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM. Aquarius is
located at 1055 Valencia Street near 22nd Street. Please call the store at
647-2272 for any further information.
