New Arrivals #187
07 May 2004

Beloved Customers and Friends:

The most important bit of news this week: Andee survived his triathlon!! See all the gory details here:
ANDEE'S TRIATHLON PIX
and read all the triumphant details further down the list. Allan, meanwhile, stayed fit by slaying an evil arch-demon in his D&D game this week. But he's keeping the details to himself.

And, almost like a fourth part to the triathlon, or another demon to slay, we've cranked out another AQ-list for you all to enjoy with the help of our loyal party of musical explorers, the barbarian, the sorcerer and the bard -- Byram, Jim and Cup. Um...okay...too much D&D this week it seems....

The Record Of The Week this time 'round is a stand-up comedy disc. We're not really known for our love of stand-up (you won't find any of us down at Punchline checking out the new talent) but we all freakin' love David Cross. And you know, with all the crap that Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld-Ashcroft are pulling every day it just feels so good to hear Cross brutalize them so...and the other stuff he says is funny too. He's not very PC but his comedy IS ultimately very moral. With our country fighting a war in Iraq that has turned out to be justified by lies and misinformation, the subversive comedy of Cross found on Its Not Funny is the best modern-day protest record we've heard, and we'd like everyone to hear it.

Among the highlights, you'll find a new disc from the mighty Corrupted. Their first in over 4 years! This should definitely hit the spot for those of you who have recently discovered Boris and are looking to expand the sludge section of your cd collection. Also the new Devendra Banhart, the massive drone document that is the Deathprod box, a new Loretta Lynn record featuring the White Stripes' Jack White, a brand new Magnetic Fields, some super demented, ultra heavy sort-of-metalcore from new AQ faves Pushing Up Daisies, a brand new stunner from Joel Phelps (ex Silkworm, current Downer Trio), and new on Touch, the latest from Rosy Parlane.

We know, that you know, that records by big AQ-fave Boris are something that we're often, unfortunately, out of, as they fly out of here real fast and then we have to wait for more to show up from Japan. And, in fact, we're still waiting on a shipment that should be here soon...really soon. But in the meantime, the two Boris albums that Southern Lord released domestically have been re-pressed (after some time in out of print limbo) and are now here, listed again below.

Of note in the big "also new in stock but not yet reviewed" section found towards the bottom of this list, are three new cds from the Finnish label Fonal: Es, Kiila and Teatteri Moderni Kanuuna. The first two are excellent avant-folk-pop albums, the latter is the soundtrack to a crazy play about a giant ass, and features members of Circle and Magyar Posse (speaking of whom, we're still expecting their new album Kings Of Time to show up sometime soon, though it was delayed by some manufacturing problems).

And there's so much more! Pixies, Street, Wolf Eyes, Piano Magic, P.G. Six, Nurse With Wound, Mountain Goats MCMS, Lali Puna, Kinski, Jolie Holland...

...um...Byram just ran back here with a tongue-twister he just invented and won't stop repeating: "Bon Scott's beeyatch bought Botch for John Botz". Makes very little sense but then that's Byram. We can hear him up front in the store repeating it still... Anyway, guess that's our cue to be done with this intro. On with the list!
